The 2016 Greene County High School baseball and softball seasons are scheduled to begin today when the Rams host the PCM (Monroe) Mustangs. Mark Sawhill is head baseball coach and Tom Kennedy is head softball coach. There is a chance of rain today, but if the games get played, KG98 will broadcast the baseball action with coverage at 7:15 p.m. and first pitch set for around 7:30 p.m.
Both Greene County programs suffered heavy 2015 graduation losses. The top pitchers and hitters for the baseball team either graduated or chose not to go out for baseball, meaning a number of new faces will take to the newly renovated Allensworth Field. Problems of poor drainage and an uneven surface were addressed last fall with an entirely new infield and vastly improved drainage.
The Rams finished third in both the 2014 and ’15 Class 3A State Softball tournaments. Seven seniors graduated in 2015 leaving the coaching staff with plenty of spots to fill. Another major change is a move up a class to 4A for the postseason.
