It’s been 21 years since a Jefferson-based program had an individual champion and that streak came to a close Thursday at the state track and field meet in Des Moines.
Sophomore Megan Durbin won the Class 3A Girls High Jump. Her winning jump was 5-feet and 5-inches and she won by having fewer misses. Her lone miss prior to 5- 6″ was at the start with her first jump of four-feet and nine-inches. Two other girls fighting for the top spot each had two or more misses before their final jumps.
Durbin is the first individual state track and field champion for a Jefferson-based program since 1995 and the first girl individual champion since 1994.
She also won the girls high jump at the Drake Relays earlier this year with a jump of five-feet and eight-inches, which was a personal best.
