IMG_6972Since 1962, the week of May 15th has been recognized as National Police Week.

Each year, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world gather in Washington DC to participate in several events in honor of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard says it’s important for everyone to take a second and thank the deputies, officers, patrolman and all law enforcement for their service.

“We want to remember all of the fallen law enforcement members across the county.  And unfortunately, you know, we had two Des Moines police officers pass away in our county this year and nobody wants to see that or attend that. So, police week really hit home this year.”

Leonard also notes that in 1931, Minburn Town Marshal Virgil Untied was murdered at the age of 33.  He was attempting to stop a burglary at a local grocery store when he was shot five times by three assailants and died in the hospital four days later.  The case remains unsolved.

The Dallas County Supervisors signed a proclamation in honor of Police Week at their meeting Tuesday.
