Everyone is invited to come preserve history this weekend at the Dexter cemetery.
Local historian Rod Stanley and the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries are teaming up to host a two-day cemetery care and gravestone repair workshop at the Dexter cemetery.
Stanley says it’s an honor to look after the memorials of families that have perished over the decades. “The family members are responsible for the stones in most instances, but for many of the stones we’ll be working with, there are no family members left. You’ll be the person doing it for them. I’ve been learning some things and the City Council gave me permission to already do some work out in the Dexter cemetery. We’ve cleaned and re-leveled stones, and it’s pretty cool to work with a 150-year-old stone and basically bring it back to life by cleaning off all of the dirt, grime and moss that has been there for decades.”
For more details and to register for the workshop call Stanley at 641-757-9173. Stanley will tell us more about the workshop and other upcoming area historic events today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
