The high school track and field season nears the halfway point soon and Greene County High School sophomore Megan Durbin has proven she’s one of Iowa’s best female high jumpers. She’s already equaled last season’s best leap of 5′ 4″, which placed her second in the Class 3A State Meet last May. The past week has been a good one as she jumped a season best 5′ 3″ at the Carroll Coed on Monday, then topped that with 5′ 4″ on Thursday in Perry.

She told Raccoon Valley Radio she tried 5′ 5″ in Perry and almost cleared it. “After almost getting 5′ 5″, hopefully I could get 5′ 6″ this year. That’d be really cool and would tie the school record (Trisha Waugh, Jefferson-Scranton, 1988). So far it’s been a really good season and has kept getting better.”

The Drake Relays deadline for submitting high school performances is Thursday, April 21. Durbin will no doubt be a Drake Relays qualifier for the first time as her leap of 5′ 4″ ties her for  the second highest leap in the state as of April 14 behind two girls who’ve cleared 5′ 5″. The Relays accept 24 female high school high jumpers.
