Greene County RamsThe Greene County School Board will meet in special session tonight.

One of the agenda items for the Board’s approval is the 2016-17 proposed budget. Superintendent Tim Christensen says the majority of the budget is student enrollment driven and for the first time in about 15 years, enrollment is up in the district. Other portions of the budget that the Board has control over is the dropout prevention program, providing mental health counselors, the voter-approved and the board-approved physical plant and equipment levies, as well as the special education deficit.

“We’ve had a special education deficit for the past few years. When you’re looking at special ed students, you don’t know what you’re going to get in any given year for special education. So you’ve got to spend the dollars that you need to to educate those students and then you have the ability to tax back for that.”

Other items the Board will consider for approval include the 2016-17 calendar and a 2015-16 budget amendment.

The meeting will be at 5:15pm in the conference room of the administrative building in Jefferson.

Following the special board meeting will be an open public meeting with the Board at 5:30pm.
