A bill that made it through the second funnel week of the Iowa legislative session is the legalization of fireworks.

District 24 Senator Jerry Behn says he is in favor of legalizing fireworks, because of some research he did involving other states.

“In the states that have actually legalized it, they’ve seen a reduction in injuries. Now, some people would argue it’s not much statistically less, but it certainly is not an increase. The argument that a lot more people get hurt, does not appear to be accurate.”

Behn doesn’t believe the bill will make it to the Senate floor for debate because he thinks there is a lot of missing information as far as what the bill will and will not allow to legalize for fireworks.

Currently, the only legal fireworks in Iowa that are allowed without a permit are sparklers, snakes and pop noisemakers.
