tornado damageDay three of Severe Weather Awareness Week focuses on tornados.

Defined as a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth the clouds, tornados pop up each year in Iowa.

Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator Barry Halling reminds everyone that the tornado sirens are outdoor warning systems and not meant to be heard when you’re inside.

“So if you’re outside, all that really means is to go inside, listen to the radio, look at your TV, look at the app on your phone, whatever and get situational awareness.  Get an idea of what’s going on around you.  Now is the time to be prepared.”

The statewide tornado drill was originally set to take place today but has since been postponed until tomorrow morning due to the potential for severe weather in the state.

The Raccoon Valley Radio Network’s Severe Weather Action Team will participate in the drill Thursday and share information from our local newsmakers about how they work with us when storms hit the area.
