Today is recognized as World Cancer Day.

Greene County Relay for Life is also celebrating their “20 in 20” with 2016 marking the 20th annual fundraising event, which is scheduled for April 23rd. Also in that 20-year time span, the American Cancer Society reports the country’s cancer survival rate has improved by 20 percent.

Local Chair Peg Raney says their committee can’t take credit for the decrease in cancer deaths nationally, they are continuing their efforts to raise awareness and support local cancer survivors and caregivers.

The annual fundraiser honors cancer survivors with a “survivor walk” which is held before the Color Out Cancer fun run and those who are battling cancer or who lost their lives are honored with a luminary ceremony which is at the end of the April event.
