There will be some significant changes to the Iowa High School Football season next year. The board has already approved a shrinkage of the districts down from 8 districts to 7 districts which has officially opened the flood gates for many changes to come.

One of the many changes is the reduction from 32 post season qualifiers in each classification to 16 post season qualifiers in each classification. The board has also approved new criteria for at large qualifiers hinging on district realignment. The list approved by the board are as follows:

1. Anyone considered a district champ

2. Best district record

3. Head-to-head competition, either in district or non-district play

4. The state’s point differential’s tiebreaker which has now been increased from 13 points to 17 points

5. A random draw from the alphabet by the IHSAA, with the schools closest to that letter becoming the qualifier.
