The Annual Battle for the Cowbell will remain a district football game between Greene County and Perry. That and other tidbits came from the release of the 2016-17 football district assignments from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. A major change from recent seasons is that Class 3A has seven districts with eight teams in a district instead of eight districts with seven in each. Greene County is in 3A District 2 along with Perry, Ballard (Huxley), Boone, Dallas Center-Grimes, Gilbert, Iowa Falls-Alden, and Webster City. Another change is that starting this fall each district will have only two automatic qualifiers for the postseason and not four, as has been the case the past several years. Fourteen of the 16 playoff qualifiers will be automatic with the remaining two qualifying on some type of basis set forth by the IHSAA.
Exact schedules including non-district games are expected to be released by the ISHAA in the near future.
