Financial Review Shows Dallas County Hospital Continues to Perform Well
Dallas County Hospital’s financial review shows positive results.
Omaha based accounting and consulting firm Seim Johnson recently completed the review. Lead Auditor Roger Thompson says of Iowa’s 82 critical access hospitals, Dallas County Hospital’s financial indicators are at the top of the list and exceed like size hospitals in the state.
According to the report, the hospital is experiencing revenue growth while expenses have continue to stay the same or decrease. With no debt and a new facility, the report says Dallas County Hospital is “poised to continue growth in the upcoming years.”
The report shows Dallas County Hospital’s tax rate is the 7th lowest out of the 42 in Iowa that receive tax dollars, with a rate of 0.54%.
Board of Trustees Chair Mary Laborde says they are very pleased with the results of the review. “The strong financial and quality performance of Dallas County Hospital in large part is credited to our engaged employees who provide the best care for our patients each and every time.”
Perry Joins the Beaver Creek Watershed Management Authority
The City of Perry is now part of the Beaver Creek Watershed Management Authority.
The Council approved a 28E agreement to enter into the group at their meeting Monday.
City Administrator Sven Peterson says one of the goals of the Authority is to assess flood risks.
“This group will be putting together a watershed plan and hopefully come up with some action items that will help reduce flooding not only throughout the watershed but later on down the watershed.”
The group will also work to improve water quality, educate residents and allocate monies made available for the purpose of water quality and flood mitigation.
A total of 26 jurisdictions are being invited to join the Authority including Dallas, Greene, Boone, Polk and Webster counties, several cities and several Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Peterson says there’s no upfront cost to join the Authority and the group is currently using grant monies to complete the initial plan.
Dallas County Supervisors Meeting Recap
The Dallas County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Tuesday.
At the meeting, payroll change notices were approved as presented. The Board discussed a bridge inspections contract with Holm Bridge Inspections LLC. Engineer Al Miller says owner Kevin Holm will work on a $65 per hour basis, plus reimbursable expenses and a trip charge for travel to and from Story City. This is also expected to help give Assistant County Engineer Andy Case experience with inspections in the field so that he can become a certified inspector. The Board is expected to take action on the item at next week’s meeting. Engineer Al Miller then stated that all roads that wee closed because of flooding are now reopened.
A subscription agreement with IAM Responding was again considered by the Board. Emergency Medical Services Director Mike Thomason says he revised the agreement as requested by the Board. The base subscription fee is $1,100 due by January 1st. This is for $800 for the EMS department and $300 for the Sheriff’s office. A motion to approve the agreement failed on a 2-1 vote with Supervisor Mark Hanson voting yes. Thomason says he plans to bring the issue back to the Board again in the future after it is amended.
A public hearing in regards to a postage meter lease for the human services campus was then set for the January 12th meeting.
The Board then talked about residual furnishings disposal for offices that are moving to the human services campus and are no longer needed. The Board is looking to get the building vacated by the end of the month. Some departments have stated there are items they would like to use, while another suggestion was donating items to Habitat for Humanity for sale at their ReStore. Department heads will have until the 28th of December to take what they want, Habitat will be able to access remaining items for their choosing on the 29th and whatever is left will be put in the trash.
The Board then heard another update on the human services campus renovation project. Architect Jerry Purdy says touchups and the punch list are being finished up. Mail delivery, room numbers and key distribution access were also discussed.
Finally, Purdy talked about space options for the remainder of the human services campus and configuration of various areas. The contractor has agreed to do the $130,000 project as a change order so the County does not need to go out for bid. No formal action was taken.
Adel Woman Wins Raccoon Valley Radio’s Caring Christmas Food Drive
Raccoon Valley Radio has selected our $1,000 Christmas Cash Giveaway winner.
Nicholle Cross of Adel qualified for the prize at a remote broadcast as part of the Caring Christmas Food Drive at the Adel Fareway.
“I was just there talking with (Raccoon Valley Radio General Manager) John (McGee) and Tammy () I thought, I better sign up for that, we could use it and I didn’t think about it again. Got home last night and my husband said the radio station called and I started thinking about it and I was like ‘Oh, I must have won!’ and sure enough, I did.”
So how did she feel when she returned that phone call?
“I was shaking. I was so excited because we could really use the money. it was excellent.”
So now with an extra $1,000 in her pocket just in time for the holidays, how will our big winner spend the cash?
“I’m going to be responsible and pay some bills and then use the rest on Christmas.”
Cross encourages everyone to enter into the Raccoon Valley Radio contests when they have the opportunity because “you never know when it will be your time.”
