The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is restricting manure applications for animal confinements.
Any confinement facilities with at least 500 units are prohibited from applying liquid manure on ground with at least one-inch of snow or one-half inch of ice. 500 units are equal to 1,250 finishing hogs; 5,000 nursery pigs; 500 steers, immature dairy cows or other cattle and 357 mature dairy cows. Open feedlots and poultry producers don’t have to follow the guidelines, but can help by choosing their application areas from streams and flat land with little snow cover.
