Three Greene County fifth graders were recently announced as this year’s American Legion essay contest winners.
Member Barb Labate says Isabella Schroeder won first place, Kali Nelson received second place and Alexa Peters was third place for the essay contest, “What the Flag Means to Me.” Area fifth graders write a one page, no more than 300 word, essay after watching a DVD “For Which It Stands.” The goal of the essay is for students to gain a better appreciation of our country’s flag and gain more knowledge of flag etiquette and respect.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top three essays. First place was $50, second place was $25 and third place was $10. As the local winner, Schroeder’s essay will go onto the district contest for a chance to advance to the state competition. She will also have the chance to read her essay during the Memorial Day service in May.
A check presentation was made on Monday at the Greene County Intermediate School in Grand Junction.
