The Perry School Board met in regular session Monday.
At the meeting, several reports were heard in regards to the Middle Level Educators, National Science Teachers Association and Iowa Association of School Boards conferences that staff and Board members recently attended.
Director Linda Andorf talked about the sessions she took part in at the IASB conference in regards to learning how to be an effective Board member. She also mentioned a session she attended about the Des Moines school district and shared some of the similarities and differences between Perry and the metro schools. Board President Kyle Baxter then shared some of the legislative priorities the IASB has identified for the upcoming session. Many of them focus on school funding and having a budget set in a timely manner. Baxter also talked about a teacher leadership session he and Director Marjean Gries attended where Southeast Polk presented information on their experience with the program. Superintendent Lynn Ubben also talked about the conference and the social media workshop she attended with several schools sharing how they handled touchy situations in the age of social media.
Perry’s Academic Cultural Enrichment Services (PACES) Director Mary Hillman then presented a rate of pay request for the PACES office and site coordinator. She says overall the position has really evolved over the past 16 years because the program has evolved. She recommended paying this person $25 per hour for roughly six to nine hours of work per week. That’s a five-dollar increase over the past year. The request was approved by the Board.
A School Budget Review Committee (SBRC) increasing enrollment, open enrollment out and limited English proficient excess costs application was then approved in the amount of $377,109. Also approved was an SBRC application for administrative costs at Woodward Day school in the amount of $7,840.
Board policy revisions were then approved as presented, along with five early graduation requests, the appointment of Secretary Kent Bultman as the Board’s Treasurer and five resignations.
