Yard waste burning may no longer be allowed in the City of Perry if the police chief has his way.
City Administrator Sven Peterson says Chief Eric Vaughn spoke up about the issue again at the most recent City Council meeting.
“He just wanted us to make sure we’re doing the best thing with open burning. Maybe looking at some alternatives that there could be to burning, such as recycling that, composting the yard waste, things like that. He was also concerned with the health of citizens that maybe have respiratory issues. Sometimes the smoke just hangs over a neighborhood if there’s not a breeze that can pick it up and take it away.”
Peterson says he is working with the public works department and other city staff to come up with a recommendation.
Typically, yard waste burning is allowed in October and November in Perry during daylight hours only in the rear of private property.
The Council is expected to address the issue at next week’s Council meeting.
