When the ADM Volleyball Tigers take the court at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night in Adel against Creston in non-conference play, a familiar face to Tiger fans of all seasons will be representing the home team.

Junior Sydney Bertman has found success in every sport she has played at ADM, all at the varsity level. She is a top contributor to the ADM girls varsity basketball, soccer and track teams.

She was a key member of last season’s ADM volleyball team as well, and her role has been elevated thanks to the Tigers’ changing personnel between seasons. Bertman enters Thursday’s match second on the team in assists with 79, having adjusted to a new role as a setter.

ADM head coach Mary Beth Scott said that sort of versatility is what makes Bertman such a special and well-rounded athlete, which seems to be a dying breed in high school sports as specialization becomes more and more popular.

“I mean she has that ability to be able to do that and there’s not that many ‘true athletes’ that can just be so good in several sports,” Scott said. “She’s able to dedicate equal amount of time to each, and what’s enjoyable is she is so coachable. She’s willing to try new things and as she’s gotten older, her personality has started to come out a little bit more, and we enjoy seeing that as well.”

The Tigers enter tonight’s match 8-10 overall.
