Joe Olvera will look to control the middle of the Perry defense once again this year.

The Perry football team will have a small but strong nucleus to count on early in the season as the Bluejays countdown to the season opener this Friday night against ADM.

Joe Olvera was a game changer last year for Perry controlling the interior with 64 tackles.  If Friday night’s scrimmage against CMB was any indication, the senior could be in for even a bigger season this year.

“Joe Olvera looked absolutely great tonight,” stated 5th year Head Coach Jason Olejniczak.  “In fact, Alonzo (Zarate) and Joe both looked really good in the interior.  For some reason, they kept throwing at Jacob Thompson and he kept making play after play.  He made a lot of nice plays for us in the secondary.”

The defense appears to have more game experience than the offense.  The Bluejays will look to replace graduations at the quarterback, running back and wide receiver positions along with a major overhaul on the offensive line.

“I thought Ryan (Rathje) and Tae Lucas were on the same page all night,” added Olejniczak.  “We were able to complete key passes to keep the sticks moving between the two of them.  We also hit some big plays down the middle of the field with Marcus Meri.  I thought we passed better than I expected, and didn’t run the ball as well as I expected.  A lot of that was due to the fact we weren’t prepared for what we saw in the CMB 3 man front.”

Perry will host ADM in the season and home opener this Friday night at Dewey Field.
