Next week is the beginning of another school year for the Greene County Community School District.
With that in mind, Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan has some safety tips.
Motorists need to be aware that temporary stop signs will be at the intersection of Madison and Elm street from 7:30 to 8:20am and 3 to 4:10pm. It allows for youth to cross at the controlled intersection, so motorists should be aware of that intersection.
School buses will be back out in full force starting Monday and so Morlan reminds everyone that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended.
He describes another traffic concern at the elementary school in regards to parking and dropping off kids.
“It would really help out if they (the parents) would just pull into the parking stalls that are already there and not drop kids off at the stop signs. People pull up and let the kids get out (at the stop signs) and it bottlenecks traffic there, so if they could pull into a parking stall and let the kids out or go down to the east side and let them out, that would be great.”
He adds that drivers should be alert for any youth that suddenly appear from stopped vehicles. He hopes everyone has a safe and fun school year.
