The word “comfort” is used a lot in sports, and it can mean a number of different things.
For 2012 ADM football alumnus Gavin Glenn, his increased level of comfort on and off the field could make a big difference in how much playing time he gets as a redshirt junior quarterback at Coe College this season.
In many ways, comfort is a synonym for “familiarity” when it comes to Glenn’s situation. The three-time all-state selection with the Tigers transferred into Coe prior to last season following two seasons at Division II University of Minesota-Duluth, where he never saw the field.
With a full season as the Kohawk’s backup quarterback under his belt, during which he completed 25-of-37 passes for 296 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in eight games, all coming off the bench, Glenn said he expects to be much more comfortable running the offense this season because he got those live reps.
“That and I’m just comfortable with the guys,” Glenn said. “I’ve been around everyone for a year now; probably seems like more. So my comfort level just helps me feel like I’ve been here as long as I have.”
Like any competitor, Glenn hopes to break camp as the starter. He was used to spark the Kohawks’ offense when it struggled last season, but it won’t be easy to unseat the incumbent.
Senior Josh Rekers returns as the presumed starter after starting all 10 games last season. Rekers completed 61 percent of his passes (197-323) for 2,590 yards with 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Glenn is keeping an open mind.
“They’re higher than last year,” Glenn said of his chances of being named the starter. “As the year went on, I was getting more and more playing time, so I’m comfortable where I’m at in the system. We’ll just kind of see how camp goes.”
Coe opens the season Sept. 5 at home against Wheaton College.
