Practical_Farmers_of_Iowa_horizontal_logoA Jefferson farmer will showcase his small grains and cover crop venture during a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day later this month.

The “Crop Diversity and Grazing Livestock for Soil Health” event will look at how Bill Frederick pairs crop and livestock management to reduce erosion, improve water quality and build soil health while creating a feeding area for cattle and prolonging his pasture.

Frederick will also discuss small grain production and explain planting a diverse cover crop mix.  Attendees will get to see cattle grazing on the cover crop mix, the forage growth where cattle haven’t grazed and learn how this technique can provide as a rest for permanent pastures while extending the life of the land.

Another Jefferson farmer, Scott Shriver will also showcase how he grows his own small grains and there will be a demonstration from the Greene County Soil and Water Conservation with their mobile soil health unit.

The event will be from 10am to 1pm on Wednesday, August 19th at 2443-2499 Neola Avenue, between 330th and 340th streets.  A free lunch will be served.  RSVP’s for the meal must be made by Friday, August 14th by calling 515-232-5661.

The field day is sponsored by Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District and Niman Ranch.
