Everyone is invited to a home dedication ceremony this weekend in Jefferson with Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity.
Associate Director Jeff Lamoureux says the ceremony will recognize their income-qualifying family, volunteers and the process by which Habitat went through to renovate the home at 901 West Washington Street.
The house was purchased from an out-of-state company in 2014 for $10,000. Lamoureux says the house has gone through major renovations since last fall. The home has a brand new kitchen and bathroom; new flooring; updated plumbing, electrical and heating and cooling system; interior and exterior painting; new exterior window trim; new roof on both the home and the attached two-car garage and a new driveway and sidewalk.
Lamoureux points out that rehabbing a home isn’t a typical program for Habitat for Humanity. However, he explains that by doing so, it’s a win-win for all involved.
“If we can save a little bit of money for the family (and) make it a little more cost-effective. But also it helps the community out by taking one of these homes that otherwise would just sit empty, that we can breathe new life into this home and help that neighborhood and ultimately the whole community.”
The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, July 19th at 1:30pm. The home will belong to Justin and Megan Saffell and their two children Rylie and Paxton. The public can take tours before and after a short program and refreshments will be provided by The Sanctuary, a Christian congregation in Jefferson.
The target date for the family to move in is by August 1st.
