Greene County finished tied with Saydel (Des Moines) for second place in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference after winning a make up game in Nevada yesterday afternoon over the Cubs, 10-0 in six innings by the 10-run rule. Gilbert won the HOIAC title at 17-1 with both the Rams and Eagles finishing conference play with 14-4 records. Overall, Coach Mark Sawhill’s team is 19-10, the most wins of his 13-year head coaching career. The tie for second is also the highest finish by a Ram team since joining the HOIAC nearly a decade ago.
Riah Nelsen improved his pitching record to 7-1 by blanking the Cubs on three hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. The right hander saw his earned run average drop to 0.76 and he recorded his fifth shut out of the season. The Rams had 12 hits with Nelsen aiding his own cause with a triple, single, and two runs batted in. Daric Whipple singled, doubled, and drove in one, while Colton Fitzpatrick had two singles and three RBI, with two singles and two RBI from Reid Lamoureux. Chase Stoline picked up his first varsity hit with a single, and Jordan Hostetler, Jordan Challen, and Tyler Beger also had base hits. Branden Miller knocked in a run with a SAC fly.
The Rams scored two runs in the first inning, five in the third, and three in the sixth.
