The Perry softball team saw their season come to an end Thursday night losing to Boone 3-0 in the Class 4A Regional opener. The two teams split during the course of the regular season. The Torreadors scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning with 2 outs. Sophomore Laura Anderson delivered a RBI single while the big blow came from Kennedy Hillsabeck as she crushed an opposite field double scoring two after a critical Perry error allowed the inning to continue.
The Jayette offense managed three hits on the night with Rachel Kinney leading charge. The sophomore finished with 2 hits and 2 stolen bases while Sidney Vancil provided the other base hit. Perry had a number of chances with their best scoring opportunity coming in the 1st inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Brianna Hunter was able to entice two foul pop outs to keep Perry off the board. The Jayettes also threatened in the 6th placing their first two batters on safely but could not advance them any further.
Olejniczak pitched 6 innings allowing one earned run while striking out 6. Boone entered the game as one of the top offensive teams in the ultra competitive Raccoon River Conference and the Torreadors smacked four doubles in the win. Olejniczak finished her sophomore year with a sparkling 261 strikeouts compared to her 185 a season ago.
Head Coach Tina Kenney’s squad showed continued improvement throughout the season as evident by the way they finished the regular season. Prior to last night’s game, the Jayettes had won 7 of their last 11 and finished the conference schedule with wins over Bondurant Farrar and Ballard. The Jayettes will look to carry over that type of momentum and experience into the off season as they will return a strong nucleus next year. Senior Kate Whelchel will be the only- player to move on as she takes her talents to Buena Vista.
Perry finished the campaign 15-19 while Boone improves to 25-12 and will take on 5th ranked Carlisle Saturday night.
