Flood Warning Continues for the North Raccoon River

A flood warning continues for Dallas County as river levels continue to rise.

The National Weather Service issued warning is expected to last until early Tuesday.

The area affected is between the Greene and Dallas County line to Adel.

The North Raccoon River near Perry is expected to rise more than 1.5 feet above flood stage by Sunday morning, before getting back to safe levels Tuesday.

The primary area expected to be impacted by this flooding is 125th Trail, north of Dawson and west of Highway P-46.

Free Weekend on the Raccoon River Valley Trail

If you’ve never checked out the Raccoon River Valley Trail, this is the weekend to do it.

This Saturday and Sunday cyclists, walkers, skateboarders, rollerbladers and more can use the entire trail for free.

It’s the first of three free weekends this year.  The trail can also be used without a pass the weekends of August 8th and October 10th.

New Exhibit Launches this Weekend at the Carnegie Library Museum

Perry’s Carnegie Library Museum will present a new exhibit starting this weekend.

The summer theme is Nostalgic Perry Photos, which invites everyone out to reminisce and help identify current and former Perry residents.

The exhibit kicks off this Saturday and runs through August 30th.  Also this weekend, Larry Vodenik with the Perry Historic Preservation Commission will present the first in the series of three free programs.

Sunday, he will speak about Downtown Perry Through the Years at 1:30pm.  Next month’s talk is about Popcorn Stands and Mrs. Council and the August talk is Movies and More: Things to Do in Perry.

The Carnegie Library Museum is open Saturdays from 10am-4pm and Sundays from 1-4pm.  Admission is free, though donations are accepted to help with future programs and exhibits.

 

St. Pat’s Hosts Annual Auction Saturday at La Poste

A large list of items will be available for purchase if you’re the highest bidder at the annual St. Patrick’s Auction this weekend in Perry.

The event is the Catholic parish’s largest fundraiser of the year and all proceeds to fund the school.

This year it takes place at La Poste where a dinner of broasted chicken, fruit salad, cauliflower and broccoli salad, corn, rolls and apple pie will be served.

Large items and gift baskets will be bid on live with auctioneer Tom Burkgren, while smaller items will be part of a silent auction.

The event starts at 5:30pm Saturday.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.  For more information, call 465-4387.

 

More Rain Expected in the Raccoon River Valley

While today may be dry, the rain is expected to return this weekend.

It was a relatively wet week in the Raccoon River Valley.  According to the National Weather Service, Perry saw almost 1.8 inches of rain since our last report. Jefferson received 1.5 inches and 1.2 inches fell over Guthrie Center.

We’re not quite half way through the month yet, but right now the area is on track to be below normal monthly rainfall totals that range between 5 and 5.1 inches in June.
