DOT Sign MeetingAbout a dozen people attended an informational meeting about signage along state highways in Greene County.

Special guest speakers included Brent Christian and Gary Kretlow Jr. from the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to talk about several signs that are allowed and not allowed on the highways.  Greene County Chamber Tourism Committee Chair Angie Pedersen said the goal of the meeting was to get information to attract people to come to different areas of the County as they enter the community.

Topics that were covered included on-premise signs, permitted off-premise signs, official signs, Tourist Oriented Directional signs, official destination signs, private signs, special event signs and private directional signs.

Christian pointed out one sign that would work well for the County and the City of Jefferson were the Tourist Oriented Directional signs.  These signs are placed in the right-of-way and identify activities for the motoring public.  Some of the categories included tourism, agriculture, other commercial attractions and motoring services.  The signs are limited to rural areas or small towns with a population of under 5,000.  The signs are placed before the intersection, if the activity or businesses that’s being promoted needs the motoring public to turn off the highway.  These primary signs also have trailblazer signs which Christian noted are for an extra fee but can guide the public to a destination if it isn’t immediately off the highway.
