Both the ADM baseball and softball teams were active over the weekend at tournaments, the former in Ankeny and the latter in Winterset. Below is a summary of how both teams performed.
#8 ADM Softball (@ Winterset Tournament):
Friday
Game 1: W, 6-3, vs. Nodaway Valley
The Details: The Tigers started the season 3-0 thanks to another strong performance from junior pitcher Molly Jacobsen, who shined both on the mound and at the plate. Jacobsen tossed 5 2/3 of one-hit ball while registering her third straight 12-strikeout game in three starts, walking just one. She also paced ADM offensively with four hits, including a double and two-run homer in the first inning.
Saturday
Game 2: W, 7-1, vs. Van Meter
The Details: Jacbosen continued her remarkable weekend in this one, this time going the distance and allowing just one run on two hits with a whopping 15 strikeouts and no walks. She also put together he second straight 4-for-4 performance at the plate, while Taylor Boorn and Montana Popp each added home runs. Popp drove in three, while Kenzi Sutton and Lexi Wyant also added RBIs.
Game 3 (tournament championship game): L, 3-1, vs. #9 Winterset
The Details: ADM’s offense was shut down for the first time this season, managing just one run on seven hits against Winterset starter Regan Thompson, who struck out nine and walked nobody. The Huskies were lead offensively by their No. 1 and 2 hitters in the lineup, Macy Johnson and Danny Barker, who combined to go 5-for-7 and scored all three of Winterset’s runs, all three coming with two outs. In the third, Barker plated Johnson, who had doubled in the previous at-bat, with a two-out single. After Johnson singled with two outs in the fifth, Barker blasted a two-run homer to left-center that put the game away.
The Tigers are now 4-1 overall and have two days off before opening the conference slate at home Wednesday night against Boone.
Baseball (@ Ankeny Tournament)
Saturday
Game 1: W, 3-1, vs. North Polk
The Details: Senior Chase Eddie spun a gem on the mound, limiting the Comets to one run on four hits. Logan Lemke walked the bases loaded in the ninth but worked out the jam to nail down the save. ADM scored on a Colin Gavin sacrifice fly in the second, a Gavin bases-loaded walk in third, and a Zach Ostendorf RBI single in the sixth. Eddie finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Game 2: L, 1-0 vs. Ankeny
The Details: Senior Jake Sloss wound up the tough-luck loser, allowing just one run on two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. Ankeny pushed across the game’s lone run in the top of the third on a Drew Capesius sacrifice fly. The Tigers left six men on base and wasted a 3-for-3 performance from Colin Gavin.
ADM will bring its 2-1 record back to Adel for the home opener 7:30 p.m. Monday night against Caroll, a game that can be heard live on K107 and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
