Ivan Garcia found himself frustrated for nearly 40 minutes Thursday night.  His 4th shot on goal quickly turned frustration into celebration.  Garcia found the back of the net on a spectacular individual move at the 20 minute mark of the second half to send Perry to a 1-0 2nd Round sub state soccer win over Iowa Falls-Alden AGWSR.

“They just kept everybody back and loaded the box all night on us,” commented the All Conference winger.  “They were forcing me to use my left leg for most of the night but we knew we just had to keep putting the pressure on and it paid off.  You start to watch the clock and start to press a little so it was a huge relief to put it through, and I had to do with it my left foot.”

Perry senior goal keeper Jorge Soto made two fantastic saves in the final 10 minutes to preserve the Perry win.  The key save was an acrobatic leap in front of the upper left corner on a direct kick from Iowa Falls.

“Yeah, that was one heck of save,” smiled a relieved Gary Overla.  “If you noticed, we didn’t give a couple of their guys a lot of room.  Our coaches did a good job of scouting and we knew they had a couple of guys who could uncork it from 25 to 30 feet.  We were ready for it and Jorge responded.”

Perry dominated possession all night outshooting the Cadets 8-1 in the first half.  Garcia had a couple of near misses before scoring the game’s only goal.

“It’s good to get this one in the books.  I think our guys are putting a lot of pressure on themselves trying to get back to state.  We just need to relax and continue to play our style.”

Perry improves to 15-3 and will play for a state berth this Saturday at 12 noon at Dewey Field against the winner of Webster City and Dallas Center Grimes.
