Golf may not be the most demanding sport physically, but it can take a serious toll mentally. After all, it’s just the golfer, the ball, and a lot of ways to mess up one’s shot.
The ADM boys golf team has displayed mental toughness and confidence all season long, en route to a state tournament appearance this Friday and Saturday at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore.
Tigers head coach Chris Goodale’s main advice to his lineup of Brody Boston, Joe Vest, Ben Sandquist, Ethan Herron, Jacob Schumaker and Micah Moyer was essentially to not change a thing.
“Just relax and play their games. Not to worry about anything else, not to get flustered and not press,” Goodale said. “You’ve got 36 holes, so just relax and play. They know they can play, they just have to have confidence in themselves and not let a shot ruin them.”
Goodale and his six qualifying golfers walked the course Thursday night to get a feel for yardage and any potential trouble spots. They tee off at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.
All participants will play an 18-hole round on Friday and Saturday, with the state champion determined by the aggregate of their top four scores from both days.
