May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says motorcyclists should wear a helmet and a heavier boot when traveling on the road. Because motorcycles are low profile vehicles, Haupert suggests some safety precautions for those driving in four-wheel vehicles.
“There’s blindspots in the back of vehicles, that you may not see them (motorcyclists). Always be aware, or if you’re going to be turning a certain direction in front of traffic, that that turn signal is on so that everyone knows what direction we’re going.”
He also recommends taking a couple extra seconds before pulling out into an intersection because motorcycles can be hidden behind poles and other obstructions.
“When you pull up to that stop sign and look both ways, sometimes you need to take that extra second for that motorcycle to move away in a different direction, so you can see it coming at you.”
He hopes everyone stays safe and share the road responsibly with motorcyclists this summer.
