Those who travel through Perry today will likely notice some extra patriotism.

The Perry Lions Club and Optimist Club started a flag project this year, and thanks to donations from local business and individuals, there are more than 100 new flags flying today.  Memorial Day is the first of five holidays the group plans to fly the flags.  Also included are the 4th of July, Flag Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

Bob Wilson with the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce says it’s a neat initiative that will have a large visual impact.

“What a great way to kick off Memorial Day and thanks to those gentlemen who have been buzzing around town, I know they’ve been working their tails off to try and get those flags in the ground.  It is an important holiday, so take time to celebrate.”

The goal is to have 300 flags up this first year.  The cost of placing and removing a three-by-five foot flag, for the five holidays is a $25 donation. Anyone wanting to donate to the project can contact Lions Club President Dave Wright or Optimist President Dr. Randy McCaulley.

All proceeds from the project will be split between the two organizations and used for other projects and causes in the community.
