It’s track and field State Qualifying Meet day and there’s a 50% or higher chance of rain and possibly thunderstorms in Atlantic where both Greene County teams have been assigned to a Class 3A meet. Paton-Churdan sends its boys to Manson for a 1A meet. The Rockets did not field a girls’ team this year.

Weather can be a big factor in determining State qualifiers because one-third of the State Meet field earns the trip to Drake Stadium in Des Moines on an at-large basis by comparing performances statewide. Also, winds today are expected from the south at 15-20 MPH, so a track that finishes races to the south, such as Atlantic’s, would be at a disadvantage compared to one facing north.

Atlantic and Greene County are joined by Carroll, Creston, Denison-Schleswig, Glenwood, Harlan, and Winterset.

P-C is joined by Manson-Northwest Webster, Alta/Aurelia, Bishop Garrigan (Algona), Clay Central-Everly, Glidden-Ralston, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, Newell-Fonda, North Union, Sioux Central (Sioux Rapids), St. Mary’s (Storm Lake), and West Bend-Mallard.

If State Qualifying Meets involving teams from the Raccoon Valley Radio area are postponed, we’ll bring you word on KG98, K107, and KDLS, and also online at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
