Two more goals for Derek Gushiken, and another win for the Tigers.

The four-year varsity starter continued his remarkable offensive season Monday night at Williams Field in Des Moines, increasing his career-high in goals to 12 while also adding his second assist of the season, as ADM boys soccer won its fifth straight contest, 3-0, over Des Moines East.

The Tigers (7-2) struck quickly on Gushiken’s first goal of the night just over four minutes into the game as Daniel Finnegan collected a corner and dished it back out to Gushiken, who, from just outside the 18, hit it low and hard into the corner of the net.

Leading 1-0 at half time, Finnegan made it 2-0 early in the second half off Gushiken’s assist. Finnegan won a ball at the edge of the box and struck a rocket off his left foot and into the opposite corner of the net.

Tigers head coach Bill Shields said ADM dominated possession in the second half, and was proud of his squad’s defense.

“I thought we played very well tonight and pretty much dominated the game,” Shields said. “They really didn’t have any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities. They had a couple of shots from outside the box, but really our defense didn’t allow them to get an unchallenged shot on goal.”

With 10 minutes to go, Gushiken iced the game. After Noah Bardwell’s free kick from just outside the 18 glanced off the hands of DSM-East’s Keeper, Gushiken was there to poke over the line.

The boys return home Thursday night for a 7 p.m. conference match against Ballard.
