This is the time of year when many motorists will encounter flooded roads during a storm. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says that even a few inches of moving water over a road can be dangerous. “We need to realize what the power of that water is. How forceful it could be. Six inches of fast moving water can knock over an adult. A few inches can carry away most vehicles, including pickups and SUV’s. As little as a foot of water can float away a vehicle, depending on the size of the vehicle.”
Kempf says that nationwide, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather hazard. Half of those deaths occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. Kempf will be our guest today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County, which airs during the 9 am, noon and 5 pm hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com
