flood safetyMarch 16th through the 20th is recognized as Flood Safety Awareness Week, a time for all of us to be reminded of the dangers of flooding.

Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator Barry Halling says he views flood safety as a matter of common sense.

“If you live in a flood plain area, be mindful of the idea that if it rains a lot, the creek is going to rise or the river is going to rise.  Low lying areas tend to have water in them, so be mindful of those things.  You all know where you live.  A lot of people have been through this (flooding) many, many times but somehow sometimes they forget.”

Halling says it’s important for residents to stay alert and informed.  He says flooding usually happens slowly, with the exception of flash flooding, and weather information sources such as Raccoon Valley broadcast warnings so there’s no reason why someone should not be prepared for a flood or know it’s coming.
