Greene County SupervisorsThe Greene County Board of Supervisors met yesterday in regular session.

During the open forum, Sid Jones, President of Home State Bank and Vice President of Greene County Development Corporation presented an idea of having a development director for the community.  He said with all the opportunities that the County has coming in the next couple of years, he would like to see one person coordinating all development and tourism entities in a unified effort.  Currently there are organizations like GCDC, Greene County Chamber, Jefferson Matters: Main Street and others that work on their specific projects.  However, it was Jones’s idea to have one person in charge of coordinating all those groups.  A meeting is organized later this week to continue the discussion.  The Board took no action on the topic.

Next, the Supervisors approved the lease agreement with the Department of Human Services for the targeted case management department to continue.

County Engineer Wade Weiss told the Supervisors about a request to name the overpass bridge in Jefferson.  A letter was sent to him from the family of Roger and Christine Nielson about naming the bridge after their son, Matthew, who was killed in action in 2011 from Operation Enduring Freedom.  The Supervisors didn’t think they had jurisdiction on the bridge because it was in the City of Jefferson.  The structure could also be under the Iowa Department of Transportation because it is on a state highway.  However, the Supervisors felt that the bridge could be named for all the Greene County area veterans instead.  No formal action was taken by the Supervisors, but they directed Weiss to have more discussions with the Nielson family.
