ADM junior Zach Johnston and Guthrie Center senior Austin Laabs finished in second place in their respective weight classes at the 2015 High School State Wrestling Championships on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Johnston lost an 11-3 major decision to Creston/Orient-Macksburg sophomore Chase Schiltz at 160 lbs. in Class 2A. Johnston also was a state tournament runner-up as a sophomore and he becomes one of the few ADM Tigers to reach the finals in back-to-back years. He ended  his junior season with a 41-3 record and was able to overcome illness late in the season.

Laabs dropped an 18-6 major decision at 182 lbs. in Class 1A to Evan Hansen of Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton.Laabs finishes his season season 44-6 with five of the losses to Hansen. The Spartans’ senior went 57-0 as he captured his second state championship. Laabs is a four-time state qualifier, one of the few Guthrie Center Tigers to ever accomplish that feat.

Those two matches capped three days of play-by-play on all three Raccoon Valley Radio Network stations and streaming on raccoonvalleyradio.com. RVR followed 21 area wrestlers to Des Moines with eight of the 21 placing in the top eight. A recap of the day session on Saturday can be found elsewhere under the Sports tab.
