Panorama (Panora) ended the girls’ basketball regular season with a 51-47 non-conference victory in Rippey over Greene County on Monday night. The Panthers, ranked seventh in Class 2A, are 19-2 and carry a winning streak of 11 games into the postseason. The Rams have dropped six straight and are 7-13 entering their regular season finale tonight in Jefferson at the middle school gym vs. Roland-Story (Story City).
The Rams wore old East Greene Hawkettes uniforms, and they came out and shot the ball well early, making eight of their first 11 shots. Greene County led 15-6 and 17-8 before the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to lead for the first time at 18-17 with 6:34 to play before halftime. Panorama extended the lead to 34-26 at intermission and led 45-32 with 4:10 to play in the third quarter. From that point on, the Panthers made just one shot from the field and scored just six points, but it was enough to hold off the 3A Rams. A Tressa Rasmussen three-pointer closed the gap to 49-47 with less than a minute to play, but the Rams missed their last six shots from the floor and did not score again. Panorama senior Jessi Campbell hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to provide the final margin. Campbell led all scorers with 20 points. Kayla Mobley had 13 points and Hannah Onken 12 for the Rams. Both teams went cold in the fourth quarter with the Panthers making just one of nine shots while the Rams were three of 16 in the final frame.
The game was played in Rippey because the gym there was dedicated to the late Bill and Maybel Wisecup in a pregame ceremony. The Wisecups left money upon their passing to renovate the gymnasium in Rippey, and a new heating system has been installed.
The Norsemen and Rams play a girl/boy doubleheader on KG98 tonight in the middle school gym in Jefferson with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m., the girls playing at six, and the boys to follow.
