Saydel swept the Greene County teams on KG98 in make up Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball on Thursday night in Des Moines. The two games were quite different as the Class 3A number 15 Eagles won 60-32 in the girls’ game and Saydel was an overtime winner, 66-64 on the boys’ side.

The Eagles improved to 14-3 overall and 11-3 in the HOIAC while the Greene County girls fell to 7-9 overall and 7-7 in the conference. The ms were in the game early, and led 12-11 seconds into the second quarter, but turnovers caught up with the Rams and the Eagles led 26-17 at intermission. The Rams had 16 first half turnovers and 33 for the game. Marissa Promes led Greene County with seven points and Brooklyn Allgood had 15 for Saydel.

The boys’ game was back and forth all night with Saydel up 23-21 at halftime, and 38-37 heading into the fourth quarter. Greene County took at 41-38 lead with 4-59 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles responded with a quick 10-0 run and led 48-41 with 2:25 remaining. The Rams came back and tied the contest at 49-49 and had the ball late, but missed a go-ahead shot with 1.9 seconds left. The Eagles last second half from the backcourt came up short.

Overtime saw the home team come to life front he foul line. After going six of 16 in regulation, Saydel made nine of 11 free throws in OT to put the game away. They were 15 of 27 overall. Greene County was two of four on overtime free throws and 12 of 22 for the game. Sophomore Trey Tucker had 32 points for the Rams and no one else reached double figures. Senior Zach McBride scored 18 for the Saydel after enter the game averaging three points per contes. Saydel is now 7-8 overall and 6-7 in the HOIAC while the Rams fall to 6-9 overall and 6-7 in league play.

The Rams play on KG98 in Gilbert tonight with coverage at 5:45 p.m., the girls’ game at 6 and the boys to follow.
