Over the past couple of days, snow has been melting and refreezing overnight when the temperatures drop back below freezing.
When melting snow refreezes, it can cause icy conditions both on the roads and sidewalks.
Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan says people need to be aware of possible ice on the sidewalks, especially in the early morning when it is still dark out and hard to see where the ice is when you go to work and school.
As snow gets compacted at intersections, possible hazards are created from it refreezing, so Morlan suggests that motorists take more time to slow down when approaching intersections, especially at uncontrolled intersections. He reminds everyone to drive defensively because you don’t know if that other person is going to stop at an uncontrolled intersection.
Another area of concern is looking for spots where the sun glares from the road or sidewalk which is a sign that possible ice is prevalent, so Morlan says you should avoid traveling over those areas.
