As expected, ADM wrestling was unable to match up with 3A schools Dowling Catholic and Valley High School in Thursday night’s tri-meet in West Des Moines. The Tigers lost to Dowling 53-18 and Valley 49-16, but also as expected, ADM’s top wrestlers performed well.
Tigers head coach Justin Schmauss scheduled the meet with the idea of challenging his wrestlers and not worrying about the team result. ADM had to forfeit five weight classes against Dowling and four against Valley, costing them 30 and 24 points, respectively.
Picking up a pair of wins for ADM were three of the squad’s ranked wrestlers, in juniors Hunter Gibson and Nathan Heath and senior Trevor harsh. Also picking up wins were senior Zach Ostendorf against Dowling and sophomore Kinnick Sutton against Valley.
Junior Zach Johnston, the No. 3-ranked wrestler in Class 2A by thepredicament.com for the 160-pound class, beat Valley’s Austin Stotts 4-0, but suffered his first loss of the season to Dowling’s Isaiah Patton. Johnston is now 23-1 on the year. With his pair of wins, Harsh –ranked fourth for 138-pound — improved to 23-3.
ADM has a quick turnaround with the Tiger Invitational this Saturday in the high school’s North Gym. The Tigers will host Atlantic, Clarke, Dallas Center-Grimes, Nevada, PCM, Red Oak, Roland-Story, Waukee and Ames, beginning at 10 a.m.
