A Des Moines man was arrested on January 9th in rural Redfield, in Guthrie County, on several drug, harassment and assault charges, after he allegedly kicked out the window of a Panora Police squad car, and assaulted three law enforcement officers. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Department reports that a medical call became complicated after the would-be patient, 39 year old Thomas E Hathaway of Des Moines became violent and threatening towards responding EMS and law enforcement. An initial physical confrontation took place between Hathaway, and the residents of the property he was staying at ended after law enforcement took Hathaway into custody and placed him in the back of a Panora Police squad car. Soon after, Hathaway kicked the rear window out of the patrol car causing significant damage. Hathaway was eventually safely booked into the Guthrie County jail, but not after allegedly assaulting a Stuart Police Officer, a Guthrie Center Police Officer and a Guthrie County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Hathaway had an arrest warrant out in Polk County, and was transferred into Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy custody the following morning. In total, Hathaway is facing charges for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Interference of Official Acts, both Simple Misdemeanors; three counts of Assault on a Peace Officer, a Serious Misdemeanor; and 1st Degree Harassment, an Aggravated Misdemeanor. Additional charges are pending.
