First-year ADM athletic director Reece Satre is approaching five months on the job, so we caught up with the former teacher and coach to see how things are going.

A graduate of Central College in Pella, Satre spent eight years as a high school science teacher and coach at Linn Mar in Marion. Satre coached high school football and baseball and junior high track.

Satre said that while he was at Linn Marr, the two athletic directors took him under their wing for an “internship” of sorts, allowing Satre to work lower level sporting events. He then spent more than two months filling in for one of the ADs when the AD had major knee surgery, and decided to start looking at administrative positions.

Now on his own for the first time, Satre said that after several months, he’s learned the ins and outs of the job and has adjusted to the mostly night-time hours of the position.

“Those first couple months are just an absolute whirlwind of meeting all sorts of other people and you’re trying to keep name straights, and just trying to get accustomed to simple things like not following a bell schedule like a teacher any more,” he said. “And obviously your schedule changes from more of a very intensive during the day to more of a everything is kind of at night, and still trying to figure out how to get stuff done in the office.”
