With the first measurable snowfall behind us, it’s now a good time to review Jefferson’s snow removal ordinance.
Police Chief Dave Morlan says that anytime a “Snow Emergency” is in effect, no one is allowed to park, abandon or leave unattended vehicles on public streets, alleys or city-owned off-street parking under the City Code.
He adds that a snow emergency is declared when there’s snow accumulation of at least one-half inch of snow and remains in effect until the snow stops and city crews had a chance to plow or remove all snow from streets and alleyways.
The ordinance is then in effect from 6pm-6am for all residential streets and 2am-6am for the downtown business district and it applies to the following streets in Jefferson:
1. Washington Street from Elm Street to Chestnut Street;
2. State Street from Elm Street to Locust Street;
3. Lincolnway from Elm Street to the Raccoon River Valley Recreation Trail Crossing;
4. Harrison Street from Elm Street to the alley between Chestnut Street and Locust Street;
5. Vine Street from Washington Street to Madison Street;
6. Chestnut Street from Washington Street to Monroe Street;
7. Wilson Avenue from Washington Street to Monroe Street;
8. Locust Street from State Street to Lincoln Way.
Chief Morlan notes that anyone who violates this ordinance could face penalties and fines of $58 including court costs and repeat offenders could have their vehicles towed. He asks that everyone help out the City and adhere to the Snow Removal Ordinance of the City.
