In this age of technology it’s pretty easy to get out of trouble if your car breaks down in the cold, or you slide into a ditch–just whip out your cell phone and call for help, but Guthrie and Adair Counties’ Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says that in rural areas around here where cell coverage can be dodgy, you need to have a way to keep your car visible, “That can happen, where you don’t have any reception, and that’s where it’s important to dress in layers, have a blanket in your vehicle, and have something bright to tie to the antenna, so you can catch somebodies’ attention as they go by.”
Kemp also warns against leaving your vehicle to walk to help in these conditions, it’s best to sit in your car and wait it out, especially if the exhaust is clear, and the heater still works.
