William Bell Memorial Tuba and Euphonium Day Concert this Afternoon in Perry
There’s more free entertainment options available in Perry this weekend as a 36 year-old tradition continues.
As Duane Griffin with Perry Fine Arts Explains, “tuba day” has become a popular fall activity for many.
“It’s in memorial of William Bell who is a famous tuba player and he is buried here in our cemetery. And so a group of tubist from around the state got together and decided to hold this here in town. They have a clinic and hire someone to come in and do some teaching on a Saturday afternoon, and then they have a public concert” says Griffin.
That public concert takes place Saturday at 4pm at the First United Methodist Church.
It’s the second of eight events in the current Perry Fine Arts season.

Special Program with a Local Soldier Today at the Perry Public Library
The Perry Public Library invites everyone to stop by for a special program with a local soldier Saturday.
The America’s Charitable Role in Afghanistan program features Perry resident August Hohl who served two deployments in Afghanistan on the Army Command Staff in 2003/2004 and again in 2006. Hohl then worked as an aviation contractor and independent civilian employee of an Afghan owned cargo airline.
While overseas, Hohl took photos of his journey and wrote articles for several newspapers around the Midwest.
The program takes place in the large meeting room from 1-2:30pm Saturday. If you have questions call 465-3569.
Last Chance to See Dr. Steven Nissen’s Paintings in Perry
This weekend is your last chance to check out the work of a unique, local artist.
The Aphasia: Paintings exhibit features work by Dr. Steven Nissen, a former Iowa State University animal science professor who was robbed of the ability to speak after a stroke and turned to art as a way to express himself.
His work has been on display since early September, but the exhibit only runs through Sunday.
If you haven’t yet stopped by to look at his work, do so Saturday between 10am and 4pm or Sunday from 1-4pm, before it’s too late.

The number of students in the Perry School District only changed slightly this fall.
According to Superintendent Lynn Ubben, the district’s certified enrollment for October is 1,834 students. That’s down two from this time last year.
Ubben says the largest class in the district is 9th grade with 162 students, followed by the 7th grade with 157 students.
Overall, Ubben says enrollment in Perry has been “pretty stable” over the last 10-12 years.
