Auditor’s Office Opened Today For Special Hours

The Greene County Auditor’s office will be open today for early voting.

Greene County Auditor Jane Heun says they will be open from 9am-5pm for those who want to cast their absentee ballots.

She comments that Greene County has had very good voter turnouts during the last presidential and gubernatorial races.  During the 2012 presidential election year, there was about a 70% turnout with about 2,050 absentee ballots.  The 2010 gubernatorial race had about a 55% turnout with 1,200 absentee ballots cast.

As of Wednesday, the Auditor’s office reports that there have been 1,470 absentee ballots submitted.

A final reminder for those still needing to cast their absentee ballot by mail must have it postmarked by Monday, November 3rd.  And you can cast an absentee ballot in person at the Auditor’s office until 5pm on Monday.

Greene County 4-H’s Awards Ceremony Is Tomorrow

On Sunday will be the Greene County 4-H awards ceremony.

Greene County ISU Extension Coordinator Michael Cooley says they will be honoring all those 4-H’ers who submitted record books that identifies the activities and events that a 4-H’er participated in throughout the year.  About 50 of the 175 eligible 4-H’ers turned in a record book.

Cooley comments that they will also recognize volunteers, donors and businesses who helped make the program possible.

There are over 200 Greene County 4-H’ers which includes Clover Kids that are in third grade as well as the 4th-12th grade regular program.

The public is invited to the Greene County High School auditorium in Jefferson at 2pm on Sunday.  A reception with refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Grand Junction Man Faces a Felony Drug Charge

A Grand Junction man faces a felony drug charge after a vehicle was found in a farm field last Sunday.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says the Greene and Boone County Sheriff’s offices, two Iowa State Patrol vehicles and Grand Junction Fire and Rescue all responded to a call about a vehicle going into a farm field on 230th Street near T Avenue at 2:50am on Sunday, October 26th.

Haupert states that 33 year-old Tyler Kokenge of Grand Junction called 911 after his vehicle went off the roadway into a farm field by T Avenue.  After authorities responded, Kokenge had left the scene and was found walking east toward Grand Junction.  Boone County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit searched the vehicle and discovered possible drugs.  Kokenge was uninjured in the incident and no vehicle or property damage was done.

He was arrested and charged with a Class D Felony for intent to deliver methamphetamine, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was booked and released from the Greene County Jail.

Kiwanis Club Sets New Record For Fundraiser

The Jefferson Kiwanis Club held its major fundraisers of the year this past weekend.

President Randy Monthei says they raised a record number of money during their silent service auction with $5,335.  He adds that they also served over 600 people at their 42 Annual pancake breakfast and believes that they will net the most money they’ve had in 12 years from that fundraiser.

Monthei would like to thank everyone for their support from those who contributed to the silent auction including area businesses and to Dr. David Jaskey for organizing the event and those who purchased tickets to their pancake fundraiser.

He comments that the funds from both the silent auction and the pancake breakfast will be going toward different service projects throughout Greene County including high school scholarships, the Boy Scouts of America and the local food pantry, the Action Resource Center to name a few.

McFarland Clinic Announces New Location In Jefferson

Four months after Greene County Medical Center decided to terminate its lease agreement with McFarland Clinic, the Ames-based organization has found a new location.

McFarland Clinic officials say their new location will be adjacent to the new Hy-Vee, Incorporated that is currently being constructed on West Washington Street in Jefferson.

McFarland Clinic has been serving Jefferson for 20 years.  They have 12 clinical offices in Iowa and they provide additional physicians to visit other patients in other communities as well.

The public is invited to a “Community Celebration Breakfast” on Friday, November 7th at 7:15am at the Greene County Community Center.  During the event, representatives with Hy-Vee and McFarland will be on-hand with updates and share artist renderings about what their respective facilities will look like.
