Greene County Candidate ForumIt was a full house at the Churdan Library last night for the Greene County candidate forum.

All five Supervisor candidates, both candidates for County Treasurer and the incumbent candidate for County Recorder attended the event and gave their reasons why they are running for their respective offices.

Republican incumbent for Supervisor Dawn Rudolph says she loves working for the people of the county and wants to continue to serve them.  She believes that education and the schools need to be the best in the state and she knows how to work well with everyone’s viewpoints to accomplish any tasks.

Her challengers are Democrat candidate Kevin Fitzpatrick Sr. and Independent Shane Olson for the District #2 seat.  Fitzpatrick has served as Farm Service Agency Director for 32 years and wants to expand that experience to include everyone, not just in the farming community to help grow the county economically and educationally.  Olson has leadership experience serving in the Marine Corp and in the National Guard.  He is currently the assistant fire chief for State of Iowa Fire Department and believes he has the ability to listen to everyone’s point of view and combining them to make the best outcome.

For Supervisor District #3, Republican incumbent Tom Contner is running against Democrat challenger Randy Monthei.  Contner has served on the Supervisors for four years and says he wants to continue to represent the people of the county because he believes he can help continue to expand the economic opportunities the county will see in the near future with the addition of the casino and entertainment complex.  Monthei says he will be responsible with the expected increase in tax base and in the overall budget and will work to wisely spend that increase on needed projects in the county.

The other contested race is for County Treasurer between Democrat incumbent Donna Lawson and Republican challenger Kristi Holz.  Lawson has been County Treasurer for 29 years.  She believes in being able to responsibly get the amenities out to the entities such as the schools and libraries as soon as the money is available and above all, she wants to continue her number one priority which is positive customer service and resolving anyone’s issues before they leave the Treasurer’s office.  Holz wants to reduce taxes with help from the added funds by the new casino and be fiscally responsible with expenses from the Treasurer’s office.

Marica Tasler is running unopposed for County Recorder.  She has been the County Recorder for 37 years and would like to continue to serve the people of Greene County.

Sandy Kersey was one of the attendees and she explains why a candidate forum is helpful for her before making her decisions at the polls next week.

“Oh I think its very important.  You get to see them one-on-one, you can go and talk to them individually, ask them questions individually, anything they want and then you get to see them all as a group too, so its very good.”

Polls will be open from 7am-9pm on Tuesday, November 4th.
