Perry nearly put together a complete four quarter game Friday night as the Bluejays gave 8-1 Humboldt all they could handle falling 28-19 in the final regular season game. Perry ends the campaign 3-6 and will miss out on the playoffs while the Wildcats earn the number two seed in District 2.
Perry fired the opening salvo midway through the second quarter on a 90 yard Will Whiton punt return, the 6th career touchdown return of his career. The touchdown would be the first of three on the night for the record setting senior. Humboldt returned the favor on special teams right before halftime as the Wildcats blocked a Whiton punt and recoverd it in the endzone to go up 14-6 at halftime.
On the first drive of the second half, Humboldt marched it down the field and scored on a fourth and goal pass play to Austin Zylsta to go up 21-6. Perry battled back with two Ryan Rathje touchdown passes..both to Whiton. The junior found the senior on a 73 yard hook up to make it 21-13 and then later in the fourth quarter the connection hooked up again from 37 yards out capping an impressive 88 yard drive. The two point conversion to tie the game failed as Marcus Meri caught the ball inside the one and Humboldt led 21-19. The Perry defense forced a punt and the Jays had one final chance to take the lead but Rathje had his third and long pass intercepted by Jaxon Hienz and returned 28 yards for a touchdown to seal the deal.
Rathje was 6-14 for 168yards and one touchdown. Whiton was 3-12 passing while adding 58 rushing and 137 receiving on three catches. Jorge Soto, Tyler Soll, Joe Olvera and Blake Jans had a solid night defensively.
Perry ends the season 3-6 and say farewell to 14 seniors.
