The Jefferson Police Department is investigating what they believe could have been a possible attempted abduction Wednesday afternoon.

According to Police Chief Dave Morlan, a local youth was walking northbound on Elm Street at Russell Street just before 2:30pm.  The boy crossed the intersection on the west side of the street and proceeded northbound.  A white van with a “red zebra stripe” on the side stopped at the intersection and the driver of the fan motioned for the boy to proceed towards him.  The boy then ran to the Community Center and called his mother while the van drove southbound on Elm Street towards the south city limits.

The man is described as an elderly gentleman with gray hair.  Morlan says it is not known if the man was attempting to entice the boy towards the van or simply allow him to cross the street.

Officers continue to look into the matter and don’t believe the public is at risk.
